Kochi University Spin-off Sunshiki Raises ¥80M Pre-Seed for Seaweed-Based Methane Reduction
Sunshiki Co., Ltd. (株式会社サンシキ), a Tokyo-based startup developing land-based seaweed cultivation and processing technology, has raised ¥80 million (approximately $X USD) in a pre-seed funding round. The investment was led by the Circular Economy Nature Positive Fund, with participation from Ando Corporation.
The company, founded in February 2024 as a spin-off from Kochi University, focuses on producing the red seaweed Asparagopsis (known in Japanese as カギケノリ) for use as a cattle-feed supplement. Research indicates that this seaweed can significantly reduce methane emissions from cattle, offering a potential solution to one of agriculture's major environmental challenges.
Sunshiki has already achieved stable production of Asparagopsis in commercial-scale test tanks and has filed both domestic and international patents for its cultivation and processing methods.
