Pikralida Raises PLN 3.5M Seed Led by iif.vc for Acute-Care Drug Rediscovery
Pikralida Secures PLN 3.5M Seed Round
Pikralida, a Poznan-based clinical-stage biotechnology company, has raised PLN 3.5 million in Seed funding. The round was led by iif.vc, with participation from R Ventures II.
What Pikralida Does
Pikralida develops therapies for acute, time-critical conditions. Its focus areas include:
- Ischemic stroke
- Traumatic brain injury
- Venomous snakebite
The company was founded by scientists Anna Krause, Joanna Lipner and Stanislaw Pikul.
Drug-Rediscovery Approach
Pikralida's therapeutic strategy is built on drug rediscovery — redeploying well-characterised molecules for new indications. Its lead candidate, PKL-021, repurposes the MMP inhibitor marimastat for neuroprotection.
Because the molecules involved are already well characterised, the rediscovery model can potentially shorten parts of the development path relative to novel compounds, though clinical validation remains the central task.
Beyond the Pipeline: CRO Services
Alongside its R&D pipeline, Pikralida operates Contract Research Organization (CRO) services. This gives the company a second revenue-oriented activity alongside its therapeutic programmes, and provides operational experience that can feed back into its own development work.
Public Co-Financing
Pikralida's programmes have drawn public co-financing, including NCBR support and over PLN 20 million in public funds for the stroke therapy. That public backing sits alongside the newly announced private Seed round.
The Investor Group
iif.vc led the PLN 3.5 million Seed round. R Ventures II also participated.
Why This Matters for the Sector
Acute, time-critical conditions such as ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury represent areas of substantial unmet need, where treatment windows are narrow and effective options are limited. Companies pursuing neuroprotection in these settings face high clinical and regulatory hurdles, but successful programmes address patient populations with few alternatives.
The drug-rediscovery angle is notable in this context: repurposed molecules carry existing safety and pharmacokinetic data, which can inform trial design and de-risk certain early-stage questions.
What to Watch
- Progress of PKL-021, the marimastat-based neuroprotection candidate, through clinical development
- Expansion of the pipeline across the company's three stated focus areas: ischemic stroke, traumatic brain injury and venomous snakebite
- Continued public co-financing alongside private capital
- Growth of the CRO services business as a complementary activity
Summary
Pikralida, founded by Anna Krause, Joanna Lipner and Stanislaw Pikul, has closed a PLN 3.5 million Seed round led by iif.vc with R Ventures II participating. The Poznan-based clinical-stage biotech develops therapies for acute, time-critical conditions using a drug-rediscovery approach, with lead candidate PKL-021 repurposing marimastat for neuroprotection. Its programmes have attracted NCBR support and over PLN 20 million in public funds for the stroke therapy, and the company also runs CRO services alongside its R&D pipeline.
