Overview

This skill helps educators design pedagogically sound Canvas LMS assignments using evidence-based learning science from the Four Learning Design Pillars. It produces assignment descriptions, aligned rubrics, Canvas settings recommendations, and can optionally create assignments directly in Canvas via canvas-mcp. The goal is clear, engaging, feedback-rich, and user-friendly assignments that align with course outcomes.

How this skill works

I guide you through clarifying learning objectives, selecting the appropriate assignment type (assignment, quiz, discussion, peer review), and making pillar-informed design decisions for structure, engagement, feedback, and UX. Based on your choices I generate a copy-paste-ready assignment description template, rubric criteria, and Canvas settings. If canvas-mcp is available and you confirm, I can create the assignment and attach the rubric in a specified course.

When to use it

  • Creating new assignments that must align to course outcomes and learning objectives
  • Rewriting traditional assignments to be more engaging, scaffolded, and feedback-oriented
  • Building quizzes, discussions, or peer-review activities with clear purpose and settings
  • Preparing copy-paste-ready content for manual Canvas creation
  • Directly creating assignments in Canvas when canvas-mcp integration is available

Best practices

  • Start with explicit, measurable learning objectives using action verbs
  • Break larger tasks into milestones or low-stakes checkpoints
  • Attach rubrics with actionable criteria and provide exemplars or worked examples
  • State estimated time and keep descriptions scannable with headers and bullets
  • Choose submission type and attempt strategy that match formative vs summative goals

Example use cases

  • Design a multi-week research paper with milestone submissions, rubric, and exemplar
  • Create a formative quiz with unlimited attempts, immediate feedback, and mixed item types
  • Build a scenario-based discussion with targeted prompts and required differentiated peer replies
  • Set up a peer review assignment with anonymous reviews, rubric, and clear reviewer prompts
  • Generate full assignment text and push it into Canvas (course ID provided) as a draft

FAQ

Yes — if canvas-mcp is available and you provide the course ID and confirm creation, I can create the assignment and attach a rubric. Otherwise I provide copy-paste-ready content.

How do you ensure the assignment aligns with learning objectives?

I start by clarifying measurable objectives with you, then generate rubric criteria and instructions directly tied to those objectives so evaluation maps to stated outcomes.
