Overview
This skill helps you define, measure, and act on the KPIs that matter for product-led growth (PLG). It delivers a complete metrics framework—from acquisition through monetization and retention—so you can build a growth dashboard and set concrete KPI targets. Use it to choose a North Star metric, define PQLs, and align teams around leading indicators.
How this skill works
I guide you through diagnostic questions to surface business model, growth loop, core value action, and stage. Then I map metrics into a PLG stack (Acquisition, Activation, Engagement, Monetization, Retention, PQL) with formulas, benchmarks, and cadences. I also provide a North Star framework, metric definition template, dashboard layouts, and guidance on leading vs. lagging indicators.
When to use it
- Design or audit a PLG metrics framework
- Build an executive or team-level PLG dashboard
- Set KPI targets for activation, conversion, or NRR
- Define a North Star metric or validate one
- Create metric definition cards and ownership
Best practices
- Start with diagnostic questions to match metrics to business model and stage
- Define the Aha Moment as an outcome, not a feature
- Prioritize leading indicators (activation, engagement) to move lagging outcomes (MRR, retention)
- Create explicit metric cards: formula, data source, owner, cadence, and alert thresholds
- Segment metrics by plan, cohort, and acquisition channel to surface root causes
Example use cases
- Create a weekly executive dashboard showing North Star, MRR, activation, and NRR
- Define Activation Rate and Time-to-Value with exact formulas and targets for onboarding experiments
- Design a PQL definition and track PQL-to-closed-won conversion for product-led sales
- Set up a free-to-paid conversion goal and track natural rate of conversion vs. sales-assisted
- Build an engagement score combining core actions, weights, and validation against retention
FAQ
Choose an action that proxies core value delivery, ensure it scales with frequency and breadth, and validate correlation with revenue and retention.
What benchmarks should I use?
Use the provided ranges as starting points (e.g., activation 20–40%, freemium conversion 2–5%, NRR >100%) and adjust by stage and segment after you establish baselines.
