Overview

This skill provides expert guidance for creating automotive manufacturing work instructions, SOPs, business processes, and APQP/PPAP documentation aligned to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and APQP/PPAP. It covers assembly, machining, quality/inspection, and material handling with templates, compliance links, and practical writing rules. Use it to produce operator-ready documents, control plans, and process definitions that are audit-ready and traceable.

How this skill works

The skill inspects the requested process type and generates structured documents using a standardized template (header, purpose & scope, responsibilities, safety, materials, steps, quality, records, references, revision history). It embeds risk-based elements (FMEA linkage, control plans), inline quality checks, and visual guidance prompts. It integrates with A3CriticalThinking for structured problem solving and with SupplyChain for supplier and incoming inspection requirements.

When to use it

  • Write work instruction for an assembly, machining, inspection, or material handling task
  • Create a department SOP or process flow for a manufacturing operation
  • Document APQP deliverables: process flow, PFMEA, control plan, WI for PPAP
  • Build a quality inspection procedure or sampling plan
  • Develop material handling and storage procedures with traceability

Best practices

  • Use active voice, imperative mood, present tense and one action per step
  • Embed quality checks and reference control plans and FMEA items
  • Include exact values: torque, feeds/speeds, tolerances, inspection criteria
  • Use photos, annotated diagrams, and flowcharts for complex or safety-critical steps
  • Maintain revision history, change bars, effective dates and training records for updates
  • Link WIs to process ownership, KPIs and layered process audits

Example use cases

  • Create a torque-sequence work instruction for final assembly with visual callouts and acceptance criteria
  • Generate a machining setup procedure with machine settings, tooling list, and first-piece inspection steps
  • Draft an incoming inspection WI for purchased components with sampling plan and PPAP references
  • Produce a material handling SOP covering FIFO, packaging, labeling, and traceability checks
  • Write a quality SOP that defines inspection frequency, Gage R&R references, and nonconforming part workflow

FAQ

IATF 16949, ISO 9001 structure, and APQP/PPAP deliverables are supported, including FMEA and control plan linkage.

How do I include supplier requirements?

Reference SupplyChain inputs: add supplier inspection steps, PPAP documentation requirements, and incoming inspection criteria into the WI or SOP.
