Overview
This skill applies hard-earned startup execution wisdom to product, strategy, and business decisions. It helps you prioritize features, choose build vs. buy, plan go-to-market moves, set pricing, and reality-check timelines, hiring, and product-market fit potential. Use it to turn intuition into structured, actionable recommendations.
How this skill works
The skill inspects a decision by forcing a clear output contract: a short recommendation, concise reasoning, identified risks with mitigations, the guiding framework, and conditions that would flip the call. For features it produces a verdict, a simple prioritization score based on learning/retention/acquisition/ops, and a candid reality check on effort, PMF signal, and reversibility. It emphasizes speed, focus, cash stewardship, and measurable learning.
When to use it
- Deciding whether to build, buy, or integrate a capability
- Prioritizing the next feature or roadmap milestone
- Reality-checking scope, timeline, and resource estimates
- Designing go-to-market strategy and pricing experiments
- Making hiring decisions or evaluating when to scale headcount
- Evaluating whether an idea shows product-market fit potential
Best practices
- Run decisions through the output contract template for clarity and traceability
- Prioritize learning velocity: prefer v1 that ships quickly and teaches
- Hire for stage: generalists early, specialists when scaling
- Price on value delivered and validate willingness to pay early
- Count runway as optionality—extend before you need it
- Make reversible decisions fast; deliberate on irreversible ones only
Example use cases
- Feature prioritization: decide build now/later/don't build and get an honest effort/PMF check
- Build-vs-buy call: weigh differentiation vs integration tax and migration path
- Go-to-market plan: test distribution channels and pricing with design partners
- Hiring: evaluate a hire by stage-fit and runway impact
- PMF evaluation: determine whether retention signals indicate pull rather than push
FAQ
The framework is designed for fast output—expect a 1–2 paragraph recommendation and a short bulleted reasoning list suitable for exec review.
What evidence is needed to flip a recommendation?
Concrete signals: validated willingness to pay, repeated user pull, measurable retention improvements, or a viable low-cost migration path for integrations.
