Overview

This skill finds where to stream any movie or TV show in the US using the WhereCanIWatch.tv public API. It returns the best streaming option, alternative free/cheapest choices, and a direct link to the full listing. Use it to compare availability and prices across major services or to filter results by your subscriptions.

How this skill works

The skill searches the WhereCanIWatch.tv API for the title and selects the best match by title and year. It then fetches availability details for that match, including service, method (subscription/free/rent/buy), price, quality, and a deep link. If you provide your subscriptions, the skill filters availability to those services and highlights the top match, followed by 1–2 useful alternatives and a link to the full WhereCanIWatch page.

When to use it

  • You ask “Where can I watch [title]?” or similar availability questions.
  • You need to compare prices or rental vs subscription options across services.
  • You want to know if a title is on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, etc.
  • You want results filtered to your current subscriptions.
  • You want a quick deep link to start watching or renting immediately.

Best practices

  • Provide the title and, if known, the year or TV/movie to improve match accuracy.
  • List any streaming subscriptions you have to get filtered recommendations.
  • Ask specifically if you prefer free, subscription, rent, or buy options to tailor the result.
  • Use short titles or include key words (series name + season/episode) when asking about TV shows.
  • Be aware results are US-only and refreshed daily; regional availability outside the US won’t be shown.

Example use cases

  • User asks: “Where can I watch Interstellar?” — returns best streaming option, free alternative, cheapest rent, and deep link.
  • User lists subscriptions: “I have Netflix and Hulu — where can I watch The Office?” — returns filtered availability prioritizing those services.
  • User wants cheapest access: “I want to watch Soul and prefer the cheapest option” — returns free/subscription or lowest rental price.
  • User asks for confirmation: “Is Stranger Things on Netflix?” — confirms presence on Netflix and links to the title page.
