Overview
This skill applies a structured diverge–cluster–converge method to generate many creative options, organize them into meaningful themes, and systematically narrow to the best choices. It balances expansive ideation with disciplined evaluation so you end with actionable, high-quality options. Use it to move from quantity to quality quickly and transparently.
How this skill works
Start by clarifying the problem, goals, constraints, and evaluation criteria. Run a divergence phase to produce 20–50 raw ideas without judgment. Cluster those ideas into 4–8 distinct themes to reveal patterns. Finally, evaluate and score ideas against the criteria, rank them, and select the top options with documented tradeoffs and next steps.
When to use it
- Exploring product or feature ideas before roadmap decisions
- Solving open-ended problems where many solutions are possible
- Developing research questions or experimental designs
- Generating marketing, naming, or content strategies
- Prioritizing a large list of initiatives or overcoming creative blocks
Best practices
- Gather clear requirements first: problem statement, constraints, target quantity, and evaluation criteria
- Generate ideas without filtering—suspend criticism during divergence
- Form 4–8 distinct clusters to avoid fragmentation or redundancy
- Use explicit scoring (numeric or weighted) and consistent criteria for convergence
- Document why top options were chosen and list runner-up ideas for future reference
Example use cases
- Product team generates 30 feature ideas, clusters by user need, then selects top 3 for prototyping using impact vs effort
- Research group produces 25 questions, clusters by method, and picks 3 tractable, high-impact studies
- Marketing brainstorms campaign concepts, groups by channel and audience, then scores by reach, cost, and novelty
- Operations designs process improvements, clusters by mechanism, and prioritizes quick wins and strategic projects
FAQ
Aim for 20–50 ideas in a single session; quantity increases diversity and surfaces non-obvious options.
What if clusters overlap?
Merge similar clusters or rename them to reflect distinct mechanisms or audiences; target 4–8 clusters for clarity.
Which evaluation method works best?
Use impact vs effort, weighted scoring, or pairwise comparison depending on decision complexity; keep criteria explicit and consistent.
