Overview
This skill is Cody Article Writer, an iterative, research-backed article writing workflow with reusable style guides and optional source citations. It guides you from topic ideation through research, thesis and outline development, section-by-section drafting, editorial passes, metadata generation, and clean Markdown export. The system saves drafts, approved sources, and exports to a dedicated project folder for reproducible output.
How this skill works
Cody Article Writer performs exploratory web research during ideation and can run comprehensive research when requested, collecting and tracking approved sources. You choose or create a style guide that controls voice, structure, and formatting; the skill then helps craft title, thesis, outline, and the article itself with inline citation markers if research is enabled. Drafts are stored as JSON state files and final articles export to Markdown with optional References and a suggested kebab-case filename.
When to use it
- Writing research-backed blog posts, feature articles, or long-form content
- When you need repeatable style control across multiple articles
- When you want integrated web research and source citation tracking
- Preparing content that requires editorial passes and metadata for publishing
- Collaborating on iterative drafts that must preserve source approvals
Best practices
- Start with exploratory research to refine the topic before outlining
- Approve a set of required and optional sources early if citations matter
- Create or choose a style guide before writing thesis and outline
- Work section-by-section for complex topics to control citation placement
- Use the editor pass to polish prose while preserving citation markers
Example use cases
- Turn a raw idea into a fully referenced feature article with metadata and export-ready Markdown
- Create a repeatable company blog style and produce multiple posts that match voice and formatting
- Collect and manage approved sources for a sensitive or technical topic with tracked citations
- Resume and continue in-progress drafts across multiple sessions without losing research
- Export articles with or without inline citations and a generated References section
FAQ
If comprehensive research is enabled you choose whether exported Markdown includes inline citation markers and a References section; if declined, markers are stripped.
Where are files stored?
The skill creates ./cody-projects/article-writer/ with styles/, drafts/, articles/, and archive/ and saves drafts and exports there.
