Overview
This skill reviews fiction chapters for coherence, cheesiness, consistency, pace, tone, and character voice. It returns targeted feedback with concrete suggested rewrites and flags for continuity. You can request single chapters, ranges, or entire drafted manuscripts and opt to apply suggested edits automatically.
How this skill works
The skill loads the chapter(s) and gathers shared context: character dossiers, previous chapters, and the project tone guide. For each chapter it runs a structured inspection that checks coherence, emotional authenticity (calls out cheesiness), consistency of facts and character behavior, pacing, and voice. When multiple chapters are requested it spawns parallel reviewer agents to process them concurrently, then aggregates verdicts and cross-chapter patterns. The output contains "what works," "what needs work," specific rewrite suggestions, and a clear verdict on readiness.
When to use it
- After completing a draft chapter and before major rewrites
- When you suspect tone or voice drift across chapters
- Before sending chapters to beta readers or editors
- To audit pacing and reveal repetitive beats
- When preparing a manuscript for submission or serialization
Best practices
- Provide character notes and a brief project tone guide for precise feedback
- Review one or a small range of chapters first to tune reviewer sensitivity
- Use parallel review for large batches to save time and identify cross-chapter issues
- Accept suggested rewrites selectively; keep major structural changes iterative
- Keep filenames or chapter numbers consistent so the tool can find previous chapters easily
Example use cases
- /fiction:review — quickly check the most recent chapter for voice and pacing problems
- /fiction:review 5 — get targeted rewrites for chapter 5 with continuity checks against chapter 4
- /fiction:review 3-7 — run parallel reviews to spot recurring clichés and pacing patterns across a section
- /fiction:review all — audit an entire drafted manuscript and produce an aggregated progress report
- /fiction:review chapters/08.md — review a specific file and apply suggested wording changes
FAQ
Single-chapter review typically takes the time required to read and analyze that chapter; parallel reviews scale largely with the longest single review rather than with chapter count.
Will the skill rewrite the chapter for me?
Yes — after presenting issues and suggested rewrites, it will apply them and output a revised chapter if you confirm.
