Overview
This skill is a revision and editing assistant built for manuscripts drafted using the Crucible structure. It guides authors from initial assessment through developmental edits, line and copy editing, and a final polish. It prioritizes preserving voice, serving the story, and asking before major changes.
How this skill works
I load the draft chapters and run a staged workflow: assessment, developmental fixes (structure, pacing, arcs), line editing (prose, voice, scene clarity), copy editing (grammar and consistency), and polish (word choice, rhythm). At decision points I present focused questions so the author approves major edits, paths, and grouped changes. Deliverables include per-chapter summaries, a compiled edited manuscript, and a change log.
When to use it
- After completing a first draft and you want structured revision
- When you need help fixing structure, pacing, or character arcs
- To improve prose, voice consistency, or dialogue
- To catch grammar, continuity, and style-guide issues before submission
- For a final polish to tighten language and sharpen hooks
Best practices
- Provide the draft chapter(s) and an outline or story bible when available
- Specify the editing level you want: developmental, line, copy, polish, or full
- Approve grouped decisions to speed the workflow and keep voice intact
- Flag any plot or character decisions up front to avoid unwanted changes
- Review edit proposals for major structural edits before they’re applied
Example use cases
- Revise Chapter 7 where pacing stalls and the emotional beat needs strengthening
- Run a full manuscript pass: developmental fixes, line edits, copy edits, and polish
- Polish selected chapters to tighten sentence rhythm and improve word choice
- Apply copy-editing and consistency checks against the story bible
- Batch line edits for all scenes with repetitive filter words or weak verbs
FAQ
No. Preserving the author’s voice is a core principle; edits focus on clarity and strength while keeping your tone.
What inputs do you need to start?
At minimum, paste the chapter(s) to edit. Providing a chapter outline and style profile speeds developmental and voice checks.
How are major structural changes handled?
Major changes are proposed with original vs proposed text and withheld until you approve via a decision prompt.
