Overview

This skill transforms vague ideas into clear, actionable requirements through collaborative discovery and Socratic dialogue. It guides users from fuzzy concepts to structured requirement briefs, preserving context across sessions for follow-up. Use it when you need to explore possibilities, clarify scope, or prepare requirements before implementation.

How this skill works

The skill asks targeted discovery questions across four phases: vision, users and context, constraints and requirements, and synthesis. It avoids premature solutions, instead prompting the user to surface priorities, constraints, and success metrics. After dialogue, it generates a concise requirement brief with functional and non-functional items, constraints, and next steps.

When to use it

  • You have a vague project idea and need to define what success looks like
  • You're exploring new features or improvements and want to discover requirements
  • Before writing a product requirements document or handing off to development
  • When stakeholders express uncertainty with words like "maybe", "thinking about", or "could we"
  • To run a focused discovery session that preserves context across follow-ups

Best practices

  • Start with high-level goals and let the skill probe for specifics using Socratic questions
  • Answer questions about users, workflows, and constraints candidly to get actionable requirements
  • Distinguish must-have vs nice-to-have features early to limit scope creep
  • Share existing systems, data sources, and timelines to surface integration and performance needs
  • Use the generated brief as the living artifact for alignment and handoff

Example use cases

  • Turning "I want to build a web app" into a prioritized requirement brief with target users and success metrics
  • Exploring improvements to an authentication system by uncovering security, UX, and compliance needs
  • Defining analytics requirements for a dashboard including metrics, processing cadence, and retention rules
  • Running a pre-PRD discovery session to produce a clear scope and open questions list
  • Preparing a roadmap for an MVP by identifying must-haves, constraints, and recommended next steps

FAQ

Session length depends on complexity; short concepts can be clarified in a few exchanges, while larger systems may require multiple sessions to capture detailed requirements.

Will the skill propose solutions?

The primary focus is discovery and synthesis. It avoids prescribing solutions early but can suggest implementation approaches after requirements are clear.
