Overview
This skill optimizes content to get cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot. It focuses on making answers extractable, authoritative, and discoverable so AI systems lift your content into generated answers rather than just listing links. Use it when you want AI assistants to quote or reference your content directly.
How this skill works
The skill runs three modes: an AI Visibility Audit to check bot access, current citations, and content extractability; Content Optimization to restructure pages into definition blocks, numbered steps, FAQ pairs, tables, and attributed stats; and Monitoring to track citations across AI platforms over time. It flags immediate blockers (robots.txt, JS-only content, missing schema, unattributed stats) and delivers concrete fixes like JSON-LD snippets and rewrite templates.
When to use it
- You want your content to appear as a cited source in AI-generated answers.
- You target question-style queries that AI assistants answer directly.
- You suspect AI crawlers are blocked or content is not indexable.
- You have data or expert quotes that should be attributed to increase citability.
- You need ongoing tracking of AI citations and competitor shifts.
Best practices
- Lead with a concise definition block within the first 200–300 words.
- Use numbered, self-contained steps for how-to content (5–10 steps max).
- Add FAQ Q&A pairs and mark them with FAQPage schema.
- Include statistics with explicit source name and year for attribution.
- Ensure AI crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and avoid JS-only critical content.
Example use cases
- Audit a product page to ensure it contains a clear definition, comparison table, and FAQ for AI citation.
- Rewrite a long technical guide into extractable H2 blocks and HowTo schema so Copilot and ChatGPT can cite it.
- Fix robots.txt and provide JSON-LD to restore lost citations after an indexing issue.
- Add attributed survey results and expert quotes so AI systems prefer your data over competitors'.
- Set up weekly manual checks and GSC AI Overview tracking to monitor visibility changes.
FAQ
No. AI SEO focuses on being cited in generated answers while traditional SEO optimizes ranking. Both matter; authority signals like backlinks still help AI citability.
How quickly do AI systems start citing updated content?
It varies by platform and crawl frequency. Fixing robots.txt can produce rapid changes; structural edits and schema typically take weeks as crawlers reindex.
