Rune Raises $40M Series A Led by Spark Capital for Modular Solar-Powered Data Centers

Rune Secures $40M Series A to Scale Solar-Powered AI Compute

Rune, a developer of modular data centers that install directly at solar plants, has raised $40 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Spark Capital and included participation from Logos Fund, Lowercarbon Capital, Timeless, Union Square Ventures, Activate Capital, and Committed Capital. The funding closed on September 16, 2026.

What Rune Does

Rune builds modular data centers designed to convert stranded and curtailed solar power into AI compute capacity. Its RELIC system runs natively on DC power and requires no grid connection, water, or heavy construction. According to the company, this approach brings GPU clusters online in as little as six weeks.

The company operates live deployments on partner solar sites, including a 200MW facility in Texas. Rune was co-founded by CEO William Layden and CTO Varun Palivela.

Why It Matters

Solar plants frequently produce more power than the grid can absorb, leading to curtailment. Rune's model places compute capacity directly at the source, using that otherwise wasted energy for AI workloads. By avoiding grid interconnection, water cooling, and traditional construction timelines, the company aims to deploy faster than conventional data center builds.

Funding Details

  • Round: Series A
  • Amount: $40,000,000 USD
  • Date: September 16, 2026
  • Lead Investor: Spark Capital
  • Participating Investors: Logos Fund, Lowercarbon Capital, Timeless, Union Square Ventures, Activate Capital, Committed Capital

Acquisition Perspective

Rune sits at the intersection of two high-demand markets: renewable energy infrastructure and AI compute. Its modular, DC-native design and existing deployments on partner solar sites, including the 200MW Texas facility, provide a tangible footprint. For acquirers in energy, data center infrastructure, or AI compute, Rune offers a differentiated approach to siting and power delivery that bypasses common bottlenecks such as grid interconnection and water availability. The Series A, led by Spark Capital with a broad syndicate of climate and technology investors, signals confidence in the company's ability to scale its deployment model.
