Onix Raises $5M Pre-Seed to Scale Expert-Backed Personal Intelligence App
Onix Secures $5M Pre-Seed Round
Onix, a Montreal-based consumer AI startup, has raised $5 million in Pre-Seed funding. The round was led by Alpha Edison, with participation from Garage Capital, Ride Home Fund, Jeremy Zimmer, and Jean-Sebastien Cournoyer.
The funding closed on September 9, 2026, and positions the company to build out its consumer AI product at a moment when privacy and data provenance are becoming central questions in the assistant market.
What Onix Does
Onix is the company behind Personal Intelligence, a mobile app that offers subscription chats with AI assistants. The distinguishing feature of the product is its knowledge base: rather than drawing on open-web data, the assistants are built exclusively on licensed knowledge from hand-picked health and wellness experts, including physicians, psychiatrists, and nutritionists.
The company was founded in 2025 by David Bennahum and Nicholas Nadeau, the former CTO of 1X. That founding pair combines consumer product experience with deep technical leadership in AI and robotics.
Privacy and Expert Provenance as Differentiators
Onix is making two structural bets that separate it from general-purpose AI assistants.
- Local model execution. The company runs small language models locally, rather than relying solely on cloud inference.
- On-device data. Chat data stays on the user's device, a design choice aimed at privacy-conscious consumers.
- Expert provenance. Assistants are grounded in licensed material from named health and wellness professionals rather than scraped web content.
Together, these choices target users who want AI assistance in sensitive categories like health and wellness but are unwilling to trade away control of their personal data.
An Expert Revenue-Sharing Model
Onix has built its content supply chain around a revenue share with the experts whose knowledge powers the assistants. Experts keep 70% of subscription revenue, an arrangement that aligns the incentives of the professionals contributing licensed material with the growth of the app itself.
That model matters for acquisition watchers: it creates a network of credentialed contributors with a direct financial stake in the product's success, rather than a one-off licensing deal.
Research and Recognition
Onix holds a partnership with Mila, the Montreal AI research institute. The company was also named among Canada's Top 100 AI Startups for 2026 by ALL IN.
Both signals point to a company embedded in Montreal's AI ecosystem, with research ties and domestic recognition to support recruiting and partnership efforts.

Why This Round Matters
Onix is entering a crowded consumer AI assistant market, but it is not competing on general-purpose breadth. Instead, it is targeting a specific wedge: expert-licensed health and wellness knowledge, delivered through a privacy-preserving mobile app with local model execution.
The Pre-Seed raise gives the company capital to develop that wedge further, deepen its roster of licensed experts, and expand the Personal Intelligence product. For investors and acquirers tracking consumer AI, Onix represents a test of whether provenance and privacy can be durable differentiators in a category dominated by scale players.
The involvement of Alpha Edison as lead, alongside a mix of funds and individual investors, suggests early conviction in that thesis. With its Mila partnership and national AI recognition already in place, Onix enters its next phase with both research credibility and fresh capital behind it.
