Volantis is a semiconductor startup building a photonic interconnect that links AI compute chips directly to memory, using custom micro-VCSEL lasers to break the capacity-versus-bandwidth tradeoff that limits GPU-based inference. Its first system, A-1, is designed to run models with more than 20 trillion parameters at up to 10,000 tokens per second per user, with first customer deliveries planned for 2027. The company is led by CEO Tapa Ghosh and builds on VCSEL laser technology already mass-produced for smartphone facial recognition.
