Universal Quantum is a University of Sussex spinout building modular trapped-ion quantum computers designed to reach the scale needed for real-world, error-corrected applications. Its approach links many small quantum chips into larger systems using patented electric-field interconnect technology and integrated chips, avoiding photonic interconnects and large laser infrastructure. Founded by Professors Sebastian Weidt and Winfried Hensinger, the company operates sites across three continents with more than 100 staff and is delivering quantum computers under contract to public institutions including the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
