Tangent Robotics is a New York-based robotics company spun out of the Robotic Manipulation and Mobility Lab at Columbia Engineering. It builds dexterous robot hands, light-based fingertip touch sensors, and the machine learning methods that combine into a fine motor skill layer for autonomous manipulation, targeting delicate industrial tasks that conventional grippers cannot handle, such as assembly, threading, connector mating and gear meshing. The founding team of Pedro Piacenza, Matei Ciocarlie and Ioannis Kymissis previously built the DISCO robot finger, robot hands for NASA Assistive Free Flyer robots on the International Space Station, and a robot hand featured in Time Magazine as one of the Best Inventions of 2023.
