Seamoretech is a Porto-based cleantech startup founded in 2021 as a spin-off of the University of Porto's Faculty of Engineering that turns desalination brine into freshwater and critical raw materials. Its containerised, plug-and-play brine-valorisation system applies forward osmosis to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge, recovering freshwater alongside minerals such as magnesium, calcium, copper and lithium while integrating into existing desalination plants without operational downtime or upfront capital expenditure. The company reports the system doubles freshwater yield and cuts energy consumption by about 50% versus reverse osmosis, with pilots running in Portugal and Spain's Canary Islands and a pilot being initiated with German salt producer K+S.
