Phosphoenix is an Amsterdam-based neurotechnology company spun out of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN), an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. It is developing a high-density implantable neuroprosthetic system that aims to restore functional vision in people with profound blindness by directly stimulating the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a relay centre in the visual pathway, bypassing damage to the retina or optic nerve. Its proprietary Fountain Probe carries more than 1,000 microelectrodes and is designed for stereotactic implantation building on established deep brain stimulation approaches; preclinical studies showed responses consistent with electrically induced visual percepts, and the company is preparing a first-in-human study with Amsterdam UMC.
