Phagestack is a German biotech startup from Pulheim near Cologne that fights antimicrobial resistance by pairing machine learning and searchable phage databases with bacteriophages - viruses that selectively infect specific harmful bacteria while sparing useful microbes, offering a targeted alternative to broad-spectrum antibiotics. The company combines AI-driven candidate identification with in-house wet-lab services such as custom phage isolation, characterisation, in-vitro screening and genomic verification, delivered from its laboratory at BioCampus Cologne, with applications in medicine as well as agriculture, aquaculture and food production. Founded in 2023 by Ewald Fernbach, Jonas Fernbach and Robert Faber, it runs a phage collection of more than 40,000 entries and supplies characterised gold-standard phage preparations to research and industry customers.
