Moonshot AI is a Beijing-based AI lab founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former Meta AI and Google Brain researcher. It develops the open-weight Kimi series of large language models — including the recently released K2.6 — which compete with frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google as well as Chinese rivals Qwen, Z.ai, and DeepSeek. The Kimi chatbot has become one of China's most-used consumer AI assistants, with annualised recurring revenue topping $200M in April 2026.
