Metacognition AI is an Australian deep tech startup building an AI operating system that adds persistent memory, reasoning and safety guardrails around large language models, with long-term ambitions to serve as the control layer for robots. Its first product, Zeus, sits beneath LLMs and lets non-experts direct machines and complex industrial systems such as open-cut mines and electricity grids by natural-language instruction. The company was founded in 2026 by AI researchers Anton van den Hengel, Stephen Gould and Paul Dalby, and is backed by CSIRO-linked deep tech venture firm Main Sequence.
