LIFESCAPES Inc. is a Tokyo-based medical-device startup that spun out of more than a decade of brain-machine interface research at Keio University by founder and chairman Junichi Ushiba, with Hayashi serving as representative director and president since June 2026. Its BMI/BCI rehabilitation systems detect a patient's intention to move from wearable EEG sensors and synchronously drive a powered hand orthosis on the paralyzed fingers, leveraging brain plasticity to rebuild motor function after stroke - an approach rated Recommendation B with high evidence level in the Japan Stroke Treatment Guidelines 2021 (2025 revision). The company develops, manufactures and sells two device lines: a clinical BMI/BCI device that received Japanese pharmaceutical regulatory certification in 2024 for hospitals, and a functional-training device for nursing-care and self-pay rehabilitation facilities. Founded in May 2018, it is backed by Global Brain, which first invested in 2022 via its JGC MIRAI Innovation Fund and again in October 2026 via the Canon Marketing Japan MIRAI Fund, alongside Japanese healthcare-focused venture investors.
