Cambridge Heavy Industries Inc.

Cambridge Heavy Industries is an MIT spinout developing compact inertial confinement fusion machines designed to produce tritium, the scarce isotope that fuels most fusion reactors. Founded in 2025 by former MIT research scientist Yun Kai together with MIT professor Keith Nelson and physicist Steve Kooi, the company applies novel additive laser optics from the MIT Nelson Lab to reach extreme pressures on a benchtop-scale system. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it is a Deshpande Center spinout, a resident at The Engine, and has run beamtime experiments at the General Atomics GALADRIEL laser facility.
