Beamlink is a Los Angeles-based telecommunications hardware startup building the Bentocell, a briefcase-sized software-defined cellular base station that meshes with other units so carriers, governments and relief teams can stand up cellular coverage in disaster zones and rural areas without traditional towers. Founded at USC after Hurricane Maria in 2017 by Mateo Abascal, Arpad Kovesdy and Max Gunara, the company targets the roughly 3.5 billion people still without reliable mobile internet and has been backed by non-dilutive support including an NSF SBIR Phase II grant and Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge prize money.
