Active Label is a 2023 spin-off of the University of Cagliari that makes patented smart labels for monitoring the temperature and environmental conditions of perishable products along the cold chain. Its optical labels, built from advanced silicate and fluorohalide materials and readable by smartphone at a cost of roughly EUR 0.01 per unit, feed a cloud platform and scanning app that help food, pharmaceutical and logistics companies certify quality, recalculate remaining shelf life and cut waste. The company emerged from more than a decade of semiconductor-materials research at the university's physics department and employs about 15 people across Sardinia.
