Overview
This skill is a focused guide to Sanskrit literary tradition for text-level discussions: plots, author biographies, genres, and classical kavya theory (rasa, dhvani, alankara). Use it to get clear, contextual summaries of major works, portraits of poets, and accessible explanations of aesthetic concepts. It frames answers for literature-focused queries and points to relevant complementary skills when you need verse-level, lexical, or grammatical analysis.
How this skill works
I summarize whole texts and their themes, sketch author biographies and stylistic traits, and map works to genres such as mahakavya, khandakavya, nataka, and prose types. I also explain core aesthetic theories (the nine rasas, dhvani, alankara schools) and show how they apply to particular authors or texts. For specific-verse close reading, I direct you to the dedicated sloka skill.
When to use it
- You want a concise plot summary or chapter/sarga overview of a Sanskrit text (e.g., Meghaduta, Raghuvamsha).
- You need a brief author biography and a note on an author's style or poetic hallmarks (e.g., Kalidasa, Bharavi).
- You are asking about literary genres, their defining features, and canonical examples.
- You seek an introduction to kavya theory—rasa, dhvani, alankara—and how it informs reading.
- You want to place a text within literary history or compare two works at the text level.
Best practices
- State the work or author clearly (title and, if known, century) to get precise context.
- Ask whether you want historical background, thematic summary, or aesthetic analysis.
- For stanza-level interpretation, invoke the sloka skill instead of this one.
- Request comparisons (authors, works, or schools) if you want stylistic contrasts.
- Indicate whether you prefer simple summary or more technical discussion of theory.
Example use cases
- What is Meghaduta about and what poetic devices does Kalidasa use there?
- Give a short biography of Kalidasa and list his major genres and stylistic traits.
- Explain the nine rasas and how a particular scene in a drama evokes one of them.
- Compare Bharavi’s epic diction with Kalidasa’s style and note key differences.
- Classify a Sanskrit work as mahakavya, khandakavya, or nataka and explain why.
FAQ
No. This skill treats texts and authors at the whole-text level; use the sloka skill for line-by-line verse analysis.
Will you provide Sanskrit text or transliteration?
I provide summaries and analyses in English. I can note famous opening verses in transliteration on request, but detailed text work is better handled with dedicated tools.
