Overview
This skill teaches a structured approach to handle challenging workplace conversations using a Preparation-Delivery-Followup framework. It helps you prepare, conduct, and close conversations about conflicts, performance, sensitive topics, and emotional reactions. The goal is practical outcomes: clearer agreements, preserved relationships, and measurable follow-through.
How this skill works
The skill guides you through three phases: prepare by clarifying facts, emotions, goals, and the other person’s perspective; deliver by opening neutrally, describing behavior and impact, listening, and proposing concrete steps; follow up by documenting agreements, checking progress, and maintaining the relationship. It includes practical tools like the SBI (Situation-Behavior-Impact) model, emotion-management tactics, escalation criteria, and conversation scripts for common scenarios.
When to use it
- Before a planned performance or corrective feedback conversation
- When addressing interpersonal conflict or public criticism
- Discussing sensitive topics (compensation, promotion, termination)
- Preparing to receive feedback or manage defensive reactions
- After an emotional exchange to document agreements and follow up
Best practices
- Focus on observable behavior and impact, not assumed intent
- Use "I" statements and the SBI model to keep discussions specific
- Prepare goals and minimum acceptable outcomes, but avoid scripting every word
- Choose a private, neutral setting and allow time for processing
- Document agreed actions, deadlines, and metrics for success
Example use cases
- Addressing repeated missed deadlines by identifying root cause and agreeing on support
- Resolving a peer conflict after a public criticism by clarifying impact and rebuilding trust
- Requesting a raise with a clear summary of contributions, outcomes, and a proposed timeline
- Handling an emotionally charged conversation by pausing, practicing, and using neutral openings
- Following up on a performance plan with check-ins and acknowledgment of improvements
FAQ
Pause, acknowledge their feeling, return to observable facts, and propose a short break or to reconvene after cooling off. If safety is a concern, escalate immediately.
How long should I prepare before the conversation?
Preparation can be brief (30–60 minutes) for routine issues or longer for high-stakes talks. Focus on clarifying facts, your goals, and likely triggers rather than scripting lines.
